Hong Kong is always being introduced as a concrete jungle with breathtaking night views, a magnificent flourishing city. Indeed these descriptions are accurate in the eyes of a local, but what I like most are the fishing villages.

It was in autumn a few years ago, I went hiking with my friends, to relieve the stress from work. We took the hiking trail from Tung Chung to Tai O, the weather was nice and there was so much to see on the way, so by the time when we arrived at Tai O, it was almost sunset. And the view was -

Speechless.

A fishing village, with housings built on the sea, with wooden logs as support, with small boats for transport and fishing, awaited us. Although there were some modern building materials constructed on top of these housings, the way the villagers lived seemed so primitive, as if this area stayed as it was back in the 1900s, as if it was left untouched.

I have never thought that Hong Kong can be so quiet and beautiful. Watching the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, I closed my eyes, took a moment to listen to the wind, the resonance of the waves, and to smell the salty air.

Tai O, a place that documented the history of Hong Kong, and is a place of serenity in the city.
